As for the complex itself, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it's not just an opera house. Inside exists the brutalist nightmare and tacky tastes of the 1970s-concrete, burnt orange paint, and terrible use of wood. But the beautiful white of the sails deceives. There's an organic relationship between the city, the opera house, and the harbor. Seeing the building, or at least the outside of it, was more awe-inspiring than I expected. Sure, the thing, at least in architectural terms, is somewhat of a geriatric, but the place has got style and stories. The Sydney Opera House is like a cool grandpa.
